Mrs. Lynn Straker (lstraker@laca.org) is the Director of the Junior Program. The Kiwanis College Fair (9/19) field trip sponsored by ACTC was a tremendous success.

College Visits

College visits are a great way to research and assess a school. There is simply no substitution for checking out a campus in person.

Juniors and seniors are permitted to miss up to two days of classes during the school year to make
college campus visits.  In order for the visit to be considered a college visit, the student must
provide the attendance secretary with the following:

- A note from parent at least 3 days prior to visit.  Students will receive a form, on
which they should obtain teacher permission and signatures.
- This form should be taken to the college visit and signed by an official there.
- The form should then be returned to the attendance secretary upon return to class.

A Call to College Anniversary

In 1991, A Call to College was born. On Sept. 18, the organization will celebrate its 20th anniversary and residents of the community are invited to attend the event. The festivities will be held from 4 - 7 p.m.

The Newark High School Orchestra and Choir will perform from 4 - 5:15 p.m., with remarks from Diane DeLawder, executive director, and Sarah Wallace, president of the ACTC governing board, at 5:30 p.m.
Two recipients of ACTC scholarships, Rebekah Estep, now a Newark High School Spanish teacher, and Hollie Lewis, an employee of Center for New Beginnings, will share their stories about how ACTC made it possible for them to further their education.

A Call to College was the dream of Lou Mitchell, a 1953 Newark High school grad, who challenged other NHS alumni to donate to a fund that would help Newark High School students with college expenses.

Since then A Call to College has awarded over $2 million in scholarships to deserving NHS seniors. Over the years, ACTC has assisted 6, 300 juniors and seniors with college applications and financial aid. NHS alumni play an important role in this organization. Over 60 percent of the donations are from Newark graduates.

“I can’t say enough about the work that has been done in a small office at Newark High School and now in every middle and elementary school. Because of the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, donors, school personnel, ACTC staff, governing board members and many others, the lives of thousands of Newark students are being changed,” Wallace said.

State Farm Youth Advisory Board

They are charged with helping State Farm design and implement a $5 million-a-year signature service-learning initiative to address issues important to State Farm and communities across the United States and Canada.”

Kiwanis College Fair

All Newark High School Juniors are invited to attend the Kiwanis College Fair on Monday, September 19th. The fair will be held in downtown Columbus. This is a tremendous opportunity to talk with admissions representatives from a wide variety of schools. The trip is sponsored by A Call to College. Parental permission is required for the trip. If you need another permission form, please see Mr. Koebel or Lynn Straker in A Call to College.

Donate Old School Clothes

Do you have used school clothes that you no longer wear? Please consider donating the clothes to me. I keep a clothes closet on hand for students who struggle to afford school clothes. If you know of a student in need of school clothes, please send them my way.

College Presentations

We have a number of colleges and universities visiting Newark High School over the next couple of months. Milligan College, Otterbein University, and Muskingum University will be here next week. Please make sure you check out Naviance for dates and times.

Steps for signing up for a college presentation:

1. Login to Naviance and sign up for a particular college visit (note: you will need to click on the "Colleges" tab at the top of the page and then click on "view all upcoming college visits").
2.  After you sign up for the visit, print off the page.
3.  Take the print out to your teacher to have them sign it.  For example,  if you sign up for a college visit taking place during 2nd period,  you would take the piece of paper to your 2nd period teacher for he or she to sign.
4. Bring the signed paper to Mrs. Starcher in Guidance (the Hub).
